Small diesel generators

I'm shopping/investigating small diesel generators 3.5-5KW. So far I've looked at:

Next Gen
Fischer Panda
Mas Power
Phasor (seems just like a Next Gen)

Any other manufacturers I should chase down?

Re: Small diesel generators

Have lombardini. It's a koller off shoot so easy to get supplies. It noisy as is all single cyclinder high rev generators but it's by far and away the lightest diesel genset.

If weight and space is not an issue go with low rev multicyclinder unit. They are far less noisy, less likely to break and longer service life.
We use the genset very rarely as we have wind and solar. Then no need for a multicyclinder unit. The lombardini has worked well for us and added only ~200lbs. It's in a sound box on vibration isolators but when time allows will build an additional sound enclosure.

Re: Small diesel generators

How did you miss the Onans? Their biggest sale point is they are 1800 rpm units, unlike most others (3k rpm units) on the market. Their OEM sound shield is a proven sound silencer. They've been around almost as long as I have on boats and are very popular in the RV market too.
You have also missed the Northern Lights units, considered one of the most reliable on the market, right up there with Onan. I'm not sure if they go below 6kw, though.
Most people seem to have a great deal of trouble with the FP units. I often meet cruisers whose units are offline for one reason or another.
I personally would be leery of the Mase gensets if I was going cruising, as I haven't noticed any dealers down here. Same for the Phasor. Check to make sure any unit you are considering can use commonly available filters and solenoids.

Re: Small diesel generators

Low rpm self contained Mase.

The issue I have with the small gensets is they are marginally less expensive that substantially more capable units. Size doesn't scale down that much either.

Re: Small diesel generators

For some of the suggestions small isn't really small.

Re: Small diesel generators

Are you looking for something few Kilowatts or small in dimension?

I know, but I'm wondering if the few kW is really driven by a space limitation.
