PamTraveler...Just had a boat pull in here from Ocracoke and they reported not less than 7ft. coming up the Pamlico to here...so I guess reasonable depth is not an issue with good navigation. I like Jeff's idea on the Bristol but I find them a bit narrow inside...but they certainly are a good solution for your issues...the 44's are nice too dependig on your budget.
