Riddle of the Sands (German TV)

Dylan Winter also posted this on the YBW forum. It's in German so most won't understand the words but I found it extremely enjoyable to watch. Great stuff.

I too enjoyed the book.

And the author, Erskine Childers, had an interesting life to say the least:

Yeah, it is a bit funny to see Carruthers and Davies argue in perfect German

Re: Riddle of the Sands (German TV)

The Book is out of Copyright, and can be found here:
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2360

That Childers was a Spy is not in doubt, but as with Ransome, for just whom and just when remains open for debate.
Not only was Childers a good writer, he had good wit:
“Take a step or two forward, lads. It will be easier that way.” were the instructions that he gave to his own Firing Squad.

Childers and Ransome share one tenuous link- Simon MacCorkindale, who starred in the British Film was married to Susan George, who played "Kitty" Walker in the 1963 BBC version of "Swallows and Amazons". (The latest version of that should be finishing up Filming right about now.)

The British "...Sands" Film left an awful lot out. This German one took its time; the Film came out in 1987, and was cut from the ~500 minute long Miniseries! (They like them long, "the Das Boot" miniseries was some 300 minutes.)

You mean the German film and not the English one starring Michael York ? If the German is it dubbed or subtitled ? I've not been able to find it mentioned as having been translated.

Re: Riddle of the Sands (German TV)

Wow, interesting timing. I just got this DVD yesterday! I have seen the youtube version before, but the quality was pretty crappy and the beautiful boats looked worth seeing in a decent picture.

EDIT: My apologies, I didn't realize there were two versions! I have the English version (different movie, not just a different sound track.) I'd like to check this one out too, so thanks for posting.
