Uss Texas

Just thought you would like to know that the fourth USS TEXAS is to be commissioned this week in Galveston. The first was the first Battleship the United States ever built and was commissioned before the MAINE. Both were obsolete before they were even launched. TEXAS and MAINE of course played importantly in the Spanish-American War. The second was/is BB-35 which fought in both the Ist and 2nd World Wars and is the flagship of the Texas Navy. (You can find the Texas Navy website on the internet) The third TEXAS was a guided-missile cruiser. The latest is a nuclear submarine which will be "champaigned" by First Lady Laura Bush.

I just got back from taking my sons (2 & 5) to see the Texas. She is in beautiful shape with a new paint job. I always enjoy touring that ship (any battleship for that matter) and was proud to able to board her. They still have special "hard hat" tours set up about 2-3 times each year. These are invitation only and you must apply to be able to take part. You get to go on a very long tour of the engine rooms and deep within the ship. Must be at least 12 years of age, otherwise I would have taken my oldest with me. He climbs those ladders like a monkey now. By all means go see her again next time your down there. She is a fine beautiful ship. I have some great pics I can post of anyone wants to see her.
Have a good week.
Philip

Mee too Hesper

I too have a special place for all warships with Battleships taking the very top spot. When ever we travel I will always check on ship tours to take part in. Just got back from the Lexington in Corpus last month. We visited the USS Cavala (she sunk the Shokaku) in April this year too. I will get a few pics of the Texas up when I get home.

I love touring the Texas. I can't imagine the fear bad guys must have had rush over them to know she's in the area and then spot the Texas coming at them with guns blazing. I guess from 14+ miles away, only a few folks would ever even know she was getting ready to reign down fire & steel on them. I'm sure our guys on June 6 1944 felt better seeing her steaming with the convoy.

We try to go visit her every time I am in La Porte.

Cheers.

Philip
