Navy stealth Zumwalt destroyer rescues fisherman in distress

Not strictly sailing related, but rescue-at-sea related.

Coast Guard, Zumwalt rescue fisherman

The captain was having chest pain and the Coast Guard received the call at 3am. The Zumwalt was performing drills nearby and offered to help.

If I saw that monster destroyer come out of the dark to rescue me? "Bring me my brown pants!"

These things are huge. A WWII Fletcher-class destroyer was 2500 tons. The recent Spruance and Arleigh Burke classes were 8000 tons or so. This thing is over 14,000 tons! And costs $4 billion.

14,000 tons and on radar it looks like 200. A friend gave us a tour at BIW. They build them in pieces upside down so that the welders don't get slag in their eyes. The pieces- which must have been 60 feet long and some 3 decks high- come together within a 1/4" variance. Absolutely incredible.

Mission Creep I think. She displaces as much as a pre-dreadnought battleship and costs 4 billion. I have no doubt they are a very capable. It seems they are designed to replace cruisers and destroyers' ASW and AA ability, plus some of a battleship's bombardment ability to keep Congress happy. As a result they are no longer a small ship to send into harms way. What protects the modern escort vessel? There will be unending congressional hearings if one of these three ships is damaged. If I understand the West Marine Adviser, a 200 ton vessel still is a lot bigger on radar then a sailboat with most radar reflectors. At least the large size will keep it from rolling the sloped sides at a right angle to radar. I suppose its unlikely to be sunk by a ferry.

Still, in all.. one well-placed cruise missile and the whole lot goes down. The running joke around here about our new Spanish-built Extremely-Non-Stealth LHD's is that they'd look better with a big target painted on the side so the bad guys know where to aim!

I think the Navy's on the wrong tack entirely. If they want stealthy, I know a perfectly good wooden yacht (with hollow timber spars of course) that could be purchased for well under a billion$ and doesn't show up on radar at all from more than a couple of miles away.

Re: Navy stealth Zumwalt destroyer rescues fisherman in distress

With the new 4G radar systems, everything shows up - including wooden boats. I can see sailboats that do not have reflectors, crab pot floats, logs sticking out of the water, things I could never see with conventional radar systems. Things have really changed when it comes to radar systems. As far as the Zum getting nailed by a Cruise Missile, I doubt it. I'm confident that she has the latest ECM systems onboard and the capability of detecting and destroying that missile long before it gets remotely close to the ship.

All the best,

Gary

And the Coast Guard has only one fully functioning ice breaker. Hey, wait... can Zumwalt break ice in polar regions?

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
