Yup... but there always some yahoo that doesn't want to use the big shipping lanes that you have to worry about.

And also, anytime you leave or arrive at an area with a major seaport, it will involve crossing established shipping lanes. The frequency of encounters goes up the closer you are to a port as multiple shipping lanes converge.

If you're making a landfall at a major port, it is generally a good idea to try and do so during the day.

Ummm, the Yahoos I was referring to are large freighters, which leave the shipping lanes, which are shipping lanes for a reason. Small sailboats don't need to be in the shipping lanes, except entering major ports with a limited approach channel.

While on this subject, don' the large freighter risking running ground. They must know the water pretty well then. Will they get a ticket from the USCG? .

My son and I always play in the shipping lane at the entrance of C&D canal. But on the weekend, the traffic isvery light. We can see them miles away. Last Sunday a hugh freighter went by, we trailed right them. It was fun. I wish someone had a camera. What a constrast - very big vs. very small

Certainly safer than playing around in airspace frequented by heavies. My other hobby, gliding, sees me in uncontrolled airspace below a very busy approach path and occasionally I'll look DOWN at a 737 and see faces in the windows. I'd rather be on a boat when that happens!
