LOD is used for traditional designs that have bowsprit and/or boomkin extensions. For example a Bristol Channel Cutter is 28' LOD, but more like 35 LOA (Length over all)
We owned a Choate 40, no bowsprit but a severely reversed transom - LOD was 36 feet.
