Shipping a 20' boat from UK to USA

I may need to have a 20' centerboard boat on a trailer shipped from England to the USA. For some reason I expected it to cost around $1000, but a quick web quote told me 1300 pounds which is almost $2,500 (on a ro-ro ship, not in a container).

Was my perception out of whack and shipping really is that expensive, or more reasonably priced alternatives exist?

That's only $125 a foot or so...actually a bit less since the trailer adds length.

You're not taking a 505 are you? They frequently arrange container loads of several of them at once, and keep prices down that way. You might want to check with whatever the UK 505 association has going, though you may have missed it; I think the North Americans are finished for the year.

No, not a 505. Kinda custom wooden boat.

By the way, I understand there's a 1.5% import duty on used boats entering the US -- anything else I should worry about when bringing the boat in?
