So as I get ready to cut the old lens out of a 20x20 deck hatch, I am wondering about what to use as replacement. My research seems to point to acrylic but it seems there are different grades of acrylic. Is there such a thing as marine grade acrylic and how do I know that is what i am getting?
You might want to check out the blog by this couple. They are completely rehabbing a French made steel boat in Florida. He recently did a complete replacement of about 12 plexiglass ports. He has done a lot of research and is very knowledgeable. He is also very willing to share his knowledge and answers emails.
Got old lense out and it is .50 inch thick plexiglass. Nobody local carries that thickness. Special order means full sheet @ $600. Not sure what to do. Afraid to reduce spec on 20x20 hatches. Clear is cheaper than shaded as well which presents the question of how to darken which we would like to do. Originals are clear or at least they were prior to all the crazing
Where are you? 1/2" plexi is pretty common. You can't go thinner or your hatch will retain a pool of water as well as being weaker. Don't cheap out and go clear - it doesn't look good, will make the boat hot and won't enhance resale value.
If locals won't cut you a piece, hit the Interweb - a couple of square feet won't cost much to ship.
