That's a long time to tread water

The Incredible Story of a Man Who Survived 20 Hours Stranded at Sea

The lesson from the Icarus story is not about human failing.
It is a lesson about the limitations of wax as an adhesive.
If you have an engineering problem solve it.

Re: That's a long time to tread water

Why do people have to have life threatening experiences before they carry the appropriate safety equipment?

He was by himself. Why wasn't he wearing a PFD with a whistle and a flare gun? Why, knowing that angling is a balance thing, did he not have himself tethered to the boat? Why was he not towing a long knotted line, which he could have grabbed on to, with a loop at the end to put around his chest?

So many things he should have been doing as an "experienced sailor" out there by himself.

25 miles from shore and no thought to what might happen if he falls overboard??????????

Re: That's a long time to tread water

Happened here just a few years back. Guy falls off his fishing boat in Rhode Island sound, miles from shore, between Point Judith and Block Island. He spends the entire night treading water, with no pfd. His boat ran ashore, with no one aboard, which began the research on the registration and eventually a Coast Guard search. They found him about 11 hours later, iirc. It was in the summer or the water temp around here would have killed him in a a few hours max (with or without a pfd).

You need to stay on the boat. I don't think there is a single fisherman in all of New England that I've ever seen tethered.

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.
