sat phone usage

hi, i'll be sailing into gulf of mexico and the carribean this summer and am
comparing globalstar gsp 1700 to the iriduim go phone. iriduim go does the things i need, which is very little voice calls, email text and most important download grib weather files to watch for the big storms. no problem except for the high price. globalstar offers free phone and annual fee of 780 dollars for 100minutes per month. question is: can i email and recieve download grib weather files? techs are not giving me straight answers. does an sailor out there use the gsp 1700?

Hi Chuck,

We use an Iridium sat phone with UUplus for all our email, SMS, and file transfers (think weather files...)

Here is a detailed write-up on our blog which also discusses the GO! and has links to other posts and resources. [in case that is of interest...]

Best wishes sorting out what is best for you.

Cheers!

Re: sat phone usage

I have never used a sat phone, is it absolutely necessary to use, I plan on making journeys that are rather short then making longer journeys as I become more experienced, also, if so, what would a good entry level sat phone be?

Hey, thanks Bill for the clear and concise information on that blog/post. Still some tech talk I don't understand, but all in all it was very informative.

BTW There is a new book called Eccentric Orbits about the history of the Iridium system that some might be interested in reading.

This is a little bit of a thread drift; The smart-aleky answer to that question is that people have been sailing for millennia without sat phones. They have only been common for a decade or two. But, seriously, for coastal sailing VHF will be fine. You could augment that with a cell phone, but, don't rely on the coverage of a cell phone.

Richard,

Before we could justify owning a sat phone, we used to rent them.

We found it very cost effective.

There are rental links for reference in the link I provided in my initial post in this thread...

In case this is worth considering...

Cheers!

Bill
