Need help with Charleston, SC area

Hello,

I have an Irwin 28 1971 sailboat that I have kept at Buzzard's Roost for about 4 years now. The marina changed hands this year and I have found out that I now have to move the boat because they are planning to do renovations. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to move it to.

I am not quite sure what to do because the boat has only been out of the slip one time since I purchased it and that day the outboard the previous owner repowered it with died. After nearly crashing into the draw bridge I was finally able to get it started and get it back to the slip.

I had intended it for it to be a place to go a couple of weekends a month during good weather for a family outing, but the rest of the family was never as interested as I thought they would be.

Anyhow, I am now stuck with this boat and I need a place to put it. Living 3 hours away in Charlotte makes it difficult to deal with getting everything taken care of.

Sailormon6 will become famous soon enough
You say the family isn't very interested in the boat, but the question is whether you're still keen on it. If you realistically think you'll use the boat, then continue looking for another marina. But, if not, then now would be a good time to list it for sale with a broker. You can have it hauled and stored on the broker's lot until it sells, hopefully in the spring. Storage on the hard will be a lot less expensive than the cost of a slip, and, if you're not likely to use the boat, it makes sense.

This is a message board for sailors. Hobby memorabilia collectors should look here: www.buymoreexcitingthingsnow.com

I recommend you pay a licensed captian to move your boat. These nice people will help you find a local one: http://www.charlestonsailingschool.com/

Hello Sailormon,

I am still personally interested in sailing, but realistically the boat is 3.5 hours away and I don't have all that much time that belongs to me alone so I doubt I will be able to find the time for at least another 8 years when my youngest heads off to college.

I had considered having a broker sell it for me some time ago, but no one wanted to take a boat with a value under $10K at the time

The club I belong to lets boat owners place their boat in the club. Then the club pays for all maintenance and moorage. They also let other club members reserve and take out your boat though. Maybe you can find something like that if the boat is in good enough condition. My club has several 22-25 foot boats and at least two of them are small 70's cruisers like yours i think.

Dman...Here's a list of marinas in your area. Stono marina would be a good choice if they have room.
Personally I think you should sell the boat...EBay, BoatTrader.com, BoatUS.com and Soundings as well as the local paper are all decent ways to advertise an inexpensive boat.
