this must have been one heck of a wave.

Wow, a wave did this?

Wow, I guess I do not want a Farr designed boat.

If he had bought a Catalina, he would have been fine (grin).

Cruisingdad, if he had bought a Catalina, we wouln't even be in the race....because the boats actually have to move forward!!

Maybe he could be, at most, seeing the race from the outside.

Just joking, please don't be offended..

Click on the link "photos showing interior of boat"

Look at the inside photos of the bow.

It is a hell of a lot more than hairline cracks.
The bow is pretty much broken off.

This looks a lot more to me like someone tried to lift it too far forward (towards the bow) on a travel lift and cracked it than it does a wave.

I have a tough time imagining wave action that would do this type of particular damage to a boat and not damage it else where.

Farrs reputation is pretty good.
They make light fast racers that are fun to run.

It's a shame...
She is a pretty boat...

Giulietta,

I never am offended! Bloody boats are slower than hell, but built fairly heavy. I will say that my 400 is suprisingly fast and sure footed... but not a J-Boat, that is for sure. I will take it that way, too. I love sailing J's, but sure as hell could not live on one!

My comment was more to get Jeff going too! He is such a nice and thoughtful guy... I can just see his face when I commented on the Catalina!!! He will have some polite way of saying I am wrong... or more likely, just not respond at all!!!

Love ya Jeff...

I would think it says more about the builder than the designer. I would think Carol Marine should have to answer some questions.

It is more likely that the underlying cause of this failure is tensile loading resulting from headstay tension. Pounding into a head sea may just have been the straw that initiated the break.

Interesting that the break is described as occurring at the point where the hull core begins. That transition point seems to have provided the "tear on dotted line" weak point.

Just an opinion based on looking at the pictures.
