South Jersey ICW?

Does anyone know if you can go from Sea Isle City, NJ, to Cape May, NJ, via the ICW in a boat with a 4' draft?

How much clearance do you need?

According to the charts, there's a fixed bridge with a clearance of 35', plus a number of bascule bridges with clearances of 8' or more (presumably, these are opening bridges).

Never done it that way. Maybe someone else here has.

Going from Sea Isle City to Cape May with a 4 foot draft should be no problem at all....watch out for the numerous small fishing boats though.

I'd be motoring anyway. But I wondered about the depth and bridge clearances...and if it was even possible to take the ICW from Sea Isle to Cape May without going outside.

Tropiccafe... I had heard sections had shoaled to 3ft. Have you done this recently??

Not Easy

I did the trip this past year and it isn't easy. I have 4.6 draft and it was nerve-wracking at some points. Doable but not a fun trip.

Good luck!

Any tips? Or warnings?

Bridges all are opening from Barnegat Bay to Cape May...no problem there. Going on a raising tide is beneficial. One consideration is that the outside route is so much faster. The inside route is full of fishing boats directly in the middle of the waterway along with a winding path to follow. The Cape May Inlet is the safest on the Jersey coast and a pleasure to enter in good weather.

I am not sure this is true for a lot of sailboats. This is what the Coastal Pilot says about this stretch of the intercoastal.

From Absecon Inlet to Delaware Bay:
vertical
clearance, 35 feet at fixed bridges,
Miles 68.9, 84.3,
