Okeechobee crossing i& St Lucie Inlet n Jan 07
Just wondering about the rim route on the Okeechobee and the inlet depths for Jan 07 - we are heading from Moore Haven to Marathon Key...any idea how long the trip is to the coast from Moore Haven to St. Lucie or Jupiter.

How long is the trip across the Okeechobee I wonder - in our 30' sailboat - averaging say, 4-5 kts.

Thank you!:o

Ahoy Sebago
To cut across the Okeechobee it will take about 2 to 3 hours. The lake is quite shallow so stay within the markers. There are a couple of places where the markers are to far apart to see. A gps helps here.
You did not mention your draft. If you have GPS and a chart plotter it is a real help. There is nothing to really get in a panic about though, just use good judgment.
Watch the weather, the lake being big and shallow really can kick up in a blow.

I have never taken the rim route around the lake so I cannot help you there. There is a lock right as you come off the lake and I if I remember there is one or two after that. This can really slow you down. give yourself at least a day and a half.

Thanks Cap'n Dave. My draft is 5' - I meant to include that. That sounds a lot better (quicker) than I anticipated. We are giving ourselves from 1/15 to 2/1 to get to Marathon Key so we can pick weather windows to get outside around Ft. Lauderdale/Miami and relax and enjoy the trip. WE have both a hand held and a chartplotter and natch - a depthsounder on the boat (but not connected to the chartplotter). Thanks again.
