The military tracked a Russian spy ship moving up the East Coast to within 30 miles of the Naval Submarine Base in Groton Wednesday and some political figures called the maneuver another aggressive action by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Residents of Connecticut should know that the arrival of the Viktor Leonov, a Russian intelligence ship, 30 miles off of our coast yesterday does not present a direct threat to our physical safety," said U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-4th District. He did say it was troubling given the stories of Russian ties and interference with the Trump administration, among other events.
you will never see a military ship on AIS or a normal sailboat radar. We have passed more than one and very close and seen neither. Last year in the Black Sea a large Russian warship passed a couple of miles ahead of us and we watched her but our AIS and radar saw nothing. In the Dardanelles we passed a submarine and a couple of warships and a warship passed us - again nothing
however it is not unusual to see non specific on the AIS as there are many ships that have nothing in their data transmission - we see a lot of that
Many have no idea that we sunk a few German U-boats closer than that during WWII. In fact, there is one lying on the bottom of Rhode Island Sound, right under the passage between Martha's Vineyard and Block. I suspect it's hard for some to believe that our merchant shipping was being torpedoed that close to the home land, but that U-Boat was sunk right after it torpedoed a merchant vessel off Point Judith.
This cat and mouse game with Russia has been going on for a century. We do it to them, they do it to us. We have dozens of military bases, literally surrounding Russia. They have a lightly armed ship off CT. Almost humorous. Nothing new here, only those that want to make it fit their pre-determined narrative.
I'm no fan of our current CIC, but it's gotten to the point that I can't even read or watch the news anymore. Is anyone so ignorant as to think they have all the information needed to make a valid assessment of a national security issue? The news media is just trying to make profit selling whatever salacious thread they can contrive.
The ship, AIS. Focus on the ship and AIS. I know it's difficult not to considering the ship's country of origin but please don't turn this thread into a political discussion. If you want to continue along those lines, we have a forum for it.
I have screenshots of some including US warships. No, not all the time but when they want to for safety of navigation.
I have noted Donna's message so have redacted all political words and replaced them with "Donna"
There is another reason why Donna might want to put its AIS on in the position shown in the original post off Donna.
Remember in the Donna Sea a Donna warship has been buzzed by Donna fighter aircraft. So Donna can hardly say Donna is innocent!
With no political intent at all, and recognizing that some intelligence ships are, well intelligence ships, there are also a goodly number that are out there for treaty verification. For example, there are treaties that require the parties to share telemetry. All parties collect information by a number of means including from ships at sea to verify that released telemetry is real. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USNS_Observation_Island_(T-AGM-23) . BTDT.
Also recognize there are valid missions for all kinds of reasons including freedom of passage. The US does that regularly. We recently did that in the South China Sea. Sovereign nations have many rights, particularly in international waters, and it is ill-advised to get wound up about other countries exercising rights the US exercises regularly.
I tried to put Canadian Bacon in my Netflix queue, I figure with all our attention on the southern border those Canucks just might try something funny.
Damnedest thing, that movie's on back order. Does anyone else smell a conspiracy? :devil
There are a couple of "Unspecified Ship - Position received via Sattellite"s out there. These mystery ships are over 80 miles off the nearest coast, which would be the eastern-most tip of Long Island... which is not exactly "within 30 miles of the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT."
Not sure on the comment about US Navy in close quarters - yea the tug is there but a tug is not a warship - we passed a sub coming into Norfolk and I do mean close - so close that a CG boat was between them and us and had a 50 cal trained on us and told us any movement to starboard on our part and they would shoot - and no ais
Off shore NJ (I think or somewhere on the East Coast) saw a sub - no AIS -- going up LI sound and sub coming in no AIS no radar - sailing up Dardanelles in very confined space sub headed the other way and no AIS and also a warship headed north and no AIS -
In Black Sea a warship crossed in front of us about 2 nm away - no AIS no radar -
coming down the Dardanelles in a very confined spot a warship came up behind us and no AIS no radar -
just what we have observed and only a few examples
If that is a Russiian ship, I bet there are some bubbleheads having a great time out there right now.
