Documentation renewal - beware

Yesterday, I got a letter in the mail telling me my documentation was due for renewal and gave me the website address to go online and renew.
The letter looked like it came from the CG and the website looked like it was CG.
I was wrong...it was a legitimate documentation service that charges $75 to renew on my behalf...something I could do on my own for $26.
Anyway, beware. IF you get this letter, only go to the CG web site to renew and save yourself $50

"The letter looked like it came from the CG "
Drop the USCG a letter (to the AG or the Commandant's office, or both) and let them know that someone appears to be impersonating the USCG and faking "official business". The phrase "Papa spank!" comes to mind.

Re: Documentation renewal - beware

It is a legit service. I'm sure they have a battery of lawyers to make sure they have the necessary wording/disclaimers to show that they are not the USCG. Like most people, I did not read the fine print. If I had, I would have realized that I was not dealing with the CG.
Lesson learned....cost me an extra $49 above the $26 the CG would have charged.
I'm just posting here and other boating forums to alert people of this scam. Yes, it is legitimate, but a scam in my book.

The site in question is run by this guy

Don't feel bad, I fell for it too. Was in a hurry, late at night, last of my data expiring...was thinking it sounded a bit much, thought I had kept up on the fee changes...Fool me once, shame on me....

Re: Documentation renewal - beware

There may be the slightest value in paying for help to initially document your vessel or transfer ownership. Renewal is simply a scam, especially now that the USCG has it's own online form and payment system.

Second in line to this scam is the fact that the USCG has us renew annually at all.

Re: Documentation renewal - beware

I hope I'll be forgiven for hijacking this thread with a related question-

My boat was USCG documented, once upon a time. I have most of the chain of custody- previous documentation letters and bills of sale.

What is involved in renewing documentation that has lapsed for several years?

If it was documented in your name and none of the information has changed, you should be able to go online to reinstate with a late fee.

If it's the first time it's going in your name, you file an initial application.

This is the online renewal form.

I would use this website. Takes you straight to the actual US Coast Guard.

USCG National Vessel Documentation Center, Home Page

Same place, I just linked the page that was 2 clicks ahead in the renewal section.
