And it doesn't matter why (other than being interesting to talk about). Increased buoyancy, longer waterline, or a combination of the two, the FACT is that despite the significantly greater weight of the larger RIB, it will both plane sooner and go faster with the same motor.

Of course, if you move up to a 14' or 16' RIB this would probably not be the case. As weight would overcome available horsepower. Just goes to show that one must put alot of thought into RIB/Hp choices.

RIB sellers should provide statisitcs about hp/planing requirements under various loads for a given model

As far as 2-strokes. I'm not gonna go there, because they don't make 'em anymore.

Yamaha does they still sell the 8, 10 & 15 hp in two stroke but probably not in CA... Port Harbor Marine in Maine stocks and sells a slew of them because no one wants the small 4 strokes due to complexity and weight....
