In the Dumpster! Hello, All. Found me a sail in the dumpster tonight. All folded up nice and neat and tied. Very slightly yellowed, barely, I'd have to say. Luff is 45'4", leech is 47' 7", foot is 15' 9". In good shape. Can't believe they tossed it. Had a 25 dollar stainless shackle at the head. Didn't have time to remove the shackle. Odd. Not sure what size the bolt rope is. Looks bigger than mine. Real heavy soft cloth. My sails are very very stiff. This was real soft, thick. I do not know much about sails and sail material, yet. Mine are newish, that came with the boat. No tears or repairs or nothin'. Musta been in the way and they just tossed it. Maybe I could cut it down and make a 100% jib for my boat? I'd have to go with- it is an excellent sail that wasn't pretty enough? What do you guys think. Here is a pic, in the twilight. Kevin
very soft is most likely why they tossed it. new sails are stiff and can hold a shape. when the sail cloth get soft and bends easily it does not hold a good shape and will be stretched out of shape. time to put in a dumpster. recycle would be better but not many good ways to do that.
I hear ya'. Might make a couple of shades for the boat, shade the deck ,I mean. I've had a few people over the years ask if I knew anyone with an old sail so as to make a shade. I'll figure something out. Maybe get a little storm sail out of it, as well. Thanks, guys. kevin
I found a sail like that in a dumpster about 15 years or so ago. Heavy duty Cal 39 main. We're still using it to haul leaves to the compost pile. Works great.
That's a good idea, Paulk! I use a plastic tarp for the same thing but gotta buy a new one every couple of year. Kinda sad, poor sail. I wonder how many miles it sailed? Gotta find something for it to do, with dignity.... Kevin
Howsabout this one? Found on the side of the road in a bulk trash pile, a New, Never Used Quantum Main for a J-80. And a used main for a J-80. Sold the new one for $1000. Still have the used one. Still have a 2 year old light 155 genny from a Nicholson 303.
canbe used for many things-- emergency or spare sail for use in case of blowout, covers for boat for shade, gear bags, sail bags...anything... dumpster is a give away location for those who choose not to seek recipients for old unwanted items. have fun with it.
dumpsters are our friends..hahahahaha
