HobieOne Sail has holes... replacement?
Hey Gang -
I just picked up a used Hobie One 12 sailboat (also marketed as Holder12) but the sail's got a bunch of what appear to be moth holes. I talked to a sail loft (they didn't see the actual sail) but they seemed cool to the idea of repairing it and cited a 14+ week turn around for a repair. They could make me a new one for $400.
Does anybody happen to know where I can find a used sail for this boat? I googled a bunch of used sail lofts but everything is listed by confusing dimensions. I just want to find a like replacement.
If the holes aren't too big and not too many, go to a sailboat store or westmarine and get a roll of sail clotch patches.
Its like a sticker, with some glue one side. Put one on each side of hole.
I used to do that, but before just applied a little 2 component glue such as Araldite on the hole, to prevent further tear.
It lasted for years....again, depends on the hole sizes and quantity.
Still have a sail from 1985 with those!!!
If you are handy, you can also stitch patches, I did all by hand stitching when I was younger....can't see now....:D
They are asking for your rig dimensions: P,& E for your main sail.
You might be able to get them from Hobie or you should be able to measure them yourself.
The enclosed link might help you better understand.
After you have an idea of the size you need, you might be able to find a used sail that will fit, or do what G said.
Thanks for the replies. I'd considered trying to find another replacement non-OE sail (in fact I have a sail from a Moth boat that looks to be pretty close in size). However, it looks like the Hobie sail somehow zips around the mast. I haven't rigged the boat yet so I'm not exactly sure how it goes, but it clearly has a pocket for the mast. I presume that this will present a problem in finding a non-Hobie replacement.
Anybody familiar with these boats? I hadn't done a whole lot of research on them before I picked this one up. I'm actually working on restoring a Philip Rhodes design Robin 12' sailing dinghy. Needed a new trailer for that and found the Hobie/trailer combo that was too good to turn down. Hobie hull is very similar to a Laser, so my plan is to use it to hone my sailing skills this summer before moving up to something bigger. The Robin has been in our family for years and was the boat that I learned to sail in, so I don't plan on parting with that one.
Thanks for any info.
Buzzard...here a link to parts manuals for the Hobie One/Holder 12...thought they might be useful to you. At the very bottom of the page...
