OMC Saildriveprep

I'm dreading this spring launch. I have a S2 8.0 with a 15hp. Saildrive in it. The broaker sayed it has been sitting for eight years when I bought her. What do I need to do to to this engine to prep it for start up? Any leads will help!

What did the surveyor say about the engine? Did you not test it on purchase?
These were notorious for leaking seals and corrosion problems...and parts are a problem. Leave her in the slings in the travel lift until you are sure there is no water intrusion and use a diesel mechanic to prep the engine for starting after such a long period.
The things you can do yourself include changing out the oil, replacing all belts and hoses and impeller and insuring you have a good, corrosion free connection from battery to starter.
Good luck...my guess is that you are facing multiple boat buck issues with an engine idle for that long in a marine environment. TRYING to get it started without the advice of a pro will only cost you more $$ in the long run. I thought you had this boat last summer...did you not get to use it?

CAM, yes I purchased the boat last summer and diden't get it in the water. I might be bragging but I think I found a jewel for pennies to the dollar. The engine has six hours on the hobbs and you can still see the Saildrive insignia on the lower unit, no corrosion. I think it was sitting on the hard longer than the broker told me, the state registrsation sticker expired in 85. No survey made. I bought her as is. The boat is an "82" S2 8.0 with hull #424, there were 426 made and she is in excelland condition, the life jackets weren't even opened from their packaging, and the sail are still crisp. I have taken your advise and contacted the marina, they will look at it and prep the engine for a somewhat large fee, likely worth it, (not including parts which they say they can still get,) shaft seals are their concern they said.I think their expertise is worth it. I hope not to be dismayed. I appretiate your advise and always glad to hear from you.

Super...sounds like one of those "little old lady cars"!! The shaft seals are exactly what I was concerned about too...but also the cylinder wall linings since they haven't seen any oil in a long long time. Glad the marina will do the job for ya. GOOD LUCK!!
