Quickstep192 is on a distinguished road
Ideas for new boat

I do my best dreaming during the winter. I have a 24' Quickstep. It's reasonably fast, very stable, has a BIG cockpit and it's pretty. It has enough space below to change close or hit the head when necessary. I'd like to have a slightly bigger boat (+/- 32'), with the same attributes along with a wheel and an inboard. It will still be a daysailer for the most part as I seldom (never) overnight, but still like to have some accomodations below for changing and a head. The Alerion express 33 would be ideal. It has a wheel, inboard, big cockpit and is quite pretty. The only problem is that I can't afford one. Can anyone think of alternatives? Pretty is a must.

Better her picture than his... If you put his on the boat, you'd get Pretty Ugly, rather than the requested pretty... My only question is how did he manage to catch her? There seems to be a strong correlation between the bad looks of the man and the good looks of the woman. The uglier the guy...the prettier the lady usually is... for example, although they're no longer together... Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

"Pretty" is a subjective thing. I am assuming that if you think the Alerion is pretty, you like the traditional look. Inexpensive (relatively) traditional looking boats in the 32' range: Pearson Vanguard; the Swiftsure; Allied Seawind; Pearson Alberg 35; Alberg 30. You can check out websites devoted to the designers Carl Alberg and to Philip Rhodes. There you will find lists of boats they designed; each one will be pretty, each one will be available, and each one (since it was probably built in the '60's) will be a relative bargain. These are full keel designs with inboard engines; wheel steering on boats that big was at best an option when they were first built. Most were made with tillers, although wheel steering was probably the most common owner upgrade. Since traditional looking boats tend to have smaller cockpits (it was considered un-seamanlike to have big cockpits that could fill with water in rough weather), putting a wheel in takes up valuable space. You may find that the Alerion-style boat premium price is for more than pretty paint and styling. Mixing old world looks with modern technology is a difficult task. Just making a spoon bow and overhangs fit together with a modern underbody is very difficult.

Alberg 30 sounds like a perfect choice, and there are at least 5 on Yachtworld right now. Sweet sailing boat!

Any Carl Alberg design. Have you looked at Cape Dorys?
