Tallship Spirit of South Carolina launched!

The Spirit of South Carolina was launched last weekend in Charleston, SC. It's a beautiful ship, 140' LOA, to be used as a sail training vessel for SC school kids, check out the website.

Lucky kids. Very nice piece of kit by the look of her. Very nice indeed.

The slip fees for her must be a bear... :D

Great looking ship!
It's great to add another tall ship to the world's inventory, especially one based on the east coast. We are very lucky in the Chesapeake area with the Virginia, Pride of Baltimore II, the Lady Maryland and the Kalmer Nyckel. Also good to read the name Peter Boudreau since he has played a role in many of the boats just named. I look forward to the Spirit of South Carolina paying the bay a visit.

Also interesting from the website is that the Spirit will be fully certified by the Coast Guard. These outfits have learned a lot the hard way since the sinking of the first Pride of Baltimore, which was origially designed as a dockside attraction and wasn't intended for the high seas. But off to sea she went, with much success at first. But she was too authentic to the original designs of the Baltimore Clippers with wide open decks below, and too few water tight bulkheads. That contributed to her sinking off Puerto Rico of course. The Pride II is Coast Guard certified and was designed for the high seas.

Anyway, thanks for the link!

One of the best days I've ever had on the water was the day, back in 1992, when another photog and I chartered a 40' lobster boat, and chased tall ships all over boston harbor and mass bay... :D 15+ hours out that day... and totally brain-fried at the end of it... but the photos rock.

Several times I've been able to be out in the Patapsco River below Baltimore when tall ships have been leaving port. Several often visit in Baltimore when there's a tall ship gathering in NY or some other place. Have also been on the water for the parade of sail for the Great Schooner Race held here every Oct. That also is fun. Dawg, no doubt we haven't had as many at one time as you had, but it really is a thrill to be that close to them on the water.
