Storms off the coast of California

Hi
I read a comment in an Amazon book review about cruising boats getting into some sort of trouble with storms on the coast of California the past month or so. Does anyone have a lead as to where I can learn more about this. Larry and I are getting ready to fly up from New Zealand to rejoin Taleisin in Alameda for the Jack London Boatshow in early April then looking forward to doing some cruising. But would like to research this while I have easy internet access as we are working on a storm project.
Thanks for any leads,
Lin Pardey

All about Timing

L & L:
The NOAA/NWS folks are usually at the Sail show so they can help with more insights & data resources.
From what I've seen / read, it's mostly seasonal. The November thru March timeframe is the worse as storms drop down out of the Gulf of Alaska bringing lots of bad weather & most of our rain/snow for the entire year.
I misread your e-mail earlier...............C has noted the "Cat Shot" (50' Cat being delivered) incident off Oregon after stop in SF below.
There was also a mysterious disappearance in late January w/good weather

Lin and Larry...I don't think that is what you heard about. Here's a link to the discussion we had about the catamaran loss off the coast of California/Oregon in December. That is what I think you are referring to. Note the NWS charts I posted that were available to the crew before they left San Francisco. Still can't understand why they left...One body has washed ashore and been identified...the other two are missing. They had made it all the way from S. Africa and lost it on the final leg.

Since you are doing storm research you may also be aware of the loss of Ken Barnes boat off Chile in January. If not...his log and explanations are on the net at www.kensolo.com. I'm sure if you read his log entries and the grand finale you might find some instructive gems!
