Why Wednesday races?

I used to regularly race my Hobie 16 at Wrightsville Beach, NC on Wednesday afternoons over 30 years ago. And lots of other places I've been seemed to have some sort of organized racing activity late Wednesday afternoon, so it seems to be a sailing tradition. My question is: Does anyone know how and when this got started?

Just a guess - perhaps it was a "reward" for having made it through half of the work week, a way to have a bit of R&R from work.

And you have a couple of days to fix anything from the previous weekend, and then a couple of days to fix anything for the following weekend.

There is a football team in England called Sheffield Wednesday. The name derives from the fact that the miners were given Wednesday afternoon off to play football, remembering that they would have been working at least six days a week.
Maybe something similar in yacht racing where in the old days the crews of the rich man's boat were fulltime paid members.

There is a football team (soccer for the American friends), in Portugal called Sport Lisboa Benfica....

That has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion, but I thought it was nice to say something...a common thing here

Some people like to hear the sound of their own voices. Gui, on the other hand finds the clicking of his keyboard iresistable.

Ever since the big boom he's been a bit bent.

I always assumed that it was from back in the old days before HMO's - doctors always took Wednesday off. I think they started the tradition!! :-)

Nah, it's the sailor's answer to all his businessmen friends playing golf.
