Here's another tragedy to ponder

I just don't understand the thinking, we've had SCW's since last week, with few windows of desent weather.

This individual left San Pedro Tuesday while the area was under warnings, headed for a destination that was reporting 14-18 foot seas, 25-40 knot winds in a 25-27 ft sailboat.

Yesterday he ended up on the rocks in Newport Bch, some 20 miles south of his departure point and a 100+ miles south of his destination

PDP-

Do you know what kind of sailboat the 27' boat was??? And why in God's name would someone head out in those conditions?? 14-18' seas are no fun at all.

BTW, according to the weather buoy data, the Seal Beach Pier had winds in the 20 knot range with gusts up to 25 knots, from noon to about 2100 hours.

Do they even know if he was still aboard the boat as it got close to the coast?

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Yesterday was by far the worst for us in the last 7 days, 25-35 with gust to 45 kts and we're about 13 nm south of Newport, Have no clue as to the kind of boat or just how many was on board, some reports say he was not alone, but we think that is incorrect.

By what you read, it sounds possible that he may have not onboard at the time, there's a good chance he was KO'ed somewhere North and the boat drifted to Newport jetty.

This is at least the fourth incident this year involving missing or rescued older sailors... There was the two that got rescued off the Hunter 27(?), the computer scientist who disappeared off of the Farrallones after going out to scatter some ashes of his mother (??), the three guys missing from the Catamaran off of Oz and this incident. Very disturbing.
