CG license questions???

Two quick questions. How many days of "sail" time do I need to add a sail endorsement to my lic?
And, under my 50 ton, can I charter while motorsailing?
Thanks in advance.

You need 12 months aboard sail or aux sail vessels.

The aux sail endorsement is for inspected vessels....those over 6 passengers for hire.

Sure, you can charter whether under power or sail, or a combination of both, providing your vessel meets the inspected requirements.

Im searching the CG sites but am not finding the right answers. Any help out there? Is it 90 days or 360/720 days for a sail endorsement on top of my exsisting lic?

"The aux sail endorsement is for inspected vessels....those over 6 passengers for hire."
Do you have a link for this? I was told by my school that ANY sailboat for hire had to have a sail endorsement.

From USCG License Requirements

Quote Master/Mate of not more of 100 GT Master:

* Two years total service in the deck department of steam or motor, sail or auxiliary sail vessels on ocean or near coastal waters. Service on Great Lakes and inland waters may substitute for up to one year of the required service.
* In order to obtain an endorsement on this license for sail or auxiliary sail vessels, the applicant must submit evidence of 12 months of service on sail or auxiliary sail vessels. The required 12 months of service may have been obtained prior to issuance of the license. Unquote

From the Maritime Institute:

Quote Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement
This Course meets the USCG testing requirement to receive a sailing endorsement on your Master's License. This endorsement is required if you will be operating an Inspected Sailing or Auxiliary Sailing Vessel. Unquote

From Worldwide Marine Training, Inc:

Quote Sail Endorsement.
A 4-hour course. This endorsement allows licensed Masters to carry seven or more passengers while under sail (up to 6 passengers is authorized without endorsement). Unquote

From DownEast Maritime:

Quote Sail Endorsements
Any applicant who has successfully completed your 4 hour Auxiliary Sail course and presents your Certificate of Training at a Regional Exam Center WITHIN ONE YEAR of the completion of training, will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(I) for an Auxiliary Sail endorsement to any deck license up to 200 gross tons. Funny, I typed in that exact search phrase and could not find this.
Thanks for your help!
So Im getting from this that I can run an uninspected charter 6PAX or less on my regular masters ticket with no further endorsements for sail?

Here are the requirements for the various charterboat captain's licenses, from the horse's mouth:

USCG Licensing

Note that the sail endorsement is for inspected vessels only (more than 6 passengers) and requires 360 days aboard a sail or aux sail vessel.

It IS very confusing these days. I think the "authorization" is more by omission than comission, in that the "sail or aux. sail endorsement" is not available -- or not listed -- on the OUPV license application these days. Rather, it is listed only on the Masters and Mates application.

Also, the language suggests that it is available only to "masters and mates" in the deck officer category. See, e.g., the Engineer License Package which includes endorsements and upgrades. At the bottom of p2 and top of p3 it says,

Quote Sail or Auxiliary Sail Endorsement (Deck License Applicants Only): Masters and Mates may be endorsed for sail or auxiliary sail, as appropriate. This endorsement authorizes the holder to operate a sail or auxiliary sail vessel, as applicable, within the scope and limitations of the license. A written examination is required to demonstrate knowledge of sailing. For licenses of 200 GRT or less, see MLD-SP-REC-13 (04) 3 REV. 3/2004

Sea Service Requirements for Limited Deck Licenses for the service required for the particular tonnage. For licenses over 200 GRT, the service required is 360 days deck service on appropriately sized sail or auxiliary sail vessels. Appropriately sized vessels are 100 GRT for the 1600 GRT license and 50 GRT for the 500 GRT license. For the any gross ton license, all the service must be on vessels over 200 GRT and at least half on vessels over 1600 GRT. This endorsement may be added as a separate transaction or with an original, raise-of-grade, or endorsement transaction. As a separate transaction, endorsement evaluation, examination (if required), and issuance fees will be applicable. As a part of another transaction, an examination fee (if required) will apply if the sail examination is the only exam administered. Unquote

Also, in the same document, Quote Master Great Lakes/Inland: Tonnage limitation based on sizes of vessels served on will apply for 25-200 GRT. See 46 CFR 10.450 for limitations.
o 25-100 GRT (46 CFR 10.455): 360 days underway deck service; 90 days on Great Lakes for Great Lakes route; 180 days on sail or auxiliary sail vessels for sail/auxiliary endorsement
o 200 GRT (46 CFR 10.452): 360 days with 180 days as master, mate, or equivalent...[etc.]. Unquote

and

Quote Master Ocean/Near Coastal: Half of required service may be accumulated on Great Lakes or inland waters. Tonnage limitation based on sizes of vessels served on will apply for 25 – 200 GRT. See 46 CFR 10.422 for limitations.
o 25-100 GRT NC (46 CFR 10.10.428): 720 days underway deck service; 360 days on sail or auxiliary sail vessels for sail/auxiliary sail endorsement
o 200 GRT NC (46 CFR 10.426): 720 days underway with 360 days as master, mate, or...[etc.] Unquote

Maybe someone else has a better idea of what is intended by the very confusing rules these days?

Bill

I just got my 50 ton ticket with auxillary sail. I had to show 360 days of service (4 hours = day for inland) and take a 10 question test for the aux. sail. License states "Master of Steam, Motor, or Auxillary Sail". If you already have your Masters ticket I would think you would only need to show your sea time and take the test, which was exceptionally easy compared to the other four tests. I'm guessing that you would need the Aux. sail endorsement to do charters in a sailboat.
