Proper Sail Number

I am considering entering the inaugural Lake Erie Solo Challenge sponsored by the Great Lakes Singlehanded Society this August. On the Required Equipment List put out by the GLSS it states "Proper sail number on all sails larger than a working jib". Neither my mainsail nor my Genoa have a sail number, and I'm wondering how one arrives at the "proper" sail number. The hull number of my Cape Dory 26 is #42, but I don't know whether or not that is the same thing as the sail number. Can anyone give me some advice on this?
Thanks for any assistance.

Sail numbers

This race requires a copy of your phrf certificate, which I would guess you don't have if you do not have a sail number. Sail numbers are assigned by US Sailing, but your local area phrf office can either point you in the right direction or even help you with that process. It usually involves filling out some forms (very easy if you have a stock boat) and giving them some money, of course.

There is a good chance you can put your hull number on if you want. That is all I have ever used. Check with the Singlehanded society.
