Snorkling out here in the eastern caribbean I almost always hear a 'popping' sound like rice crispies if I'm in calm water (i.e. snorkling in a protected bay on the caribbean side of the island). Given the number of creatures hanging out in the water around me I always assumed they had something to do with it. Unless one of the shipwrecks in the area was slowly releasing cereal into the water from a still sealed off area of the boat...

Well folks, I'm here to tell ya that the noise is known as "Strange Nautical Phenomina" To date, it has not hurt anyone. The best thing is to accept it, get used to it, and let it put you to sleep at night...:-)

YouTube - Snapping Shrimp

Has a good recording of the sound... "....you'd better stay away from the acoustic weapon of Snapping Shrimp"

I'd be very concerned... Seems like they are after your 15 year old!
