Whats the weather like

Sometimes weather or not I go sailing depends on the weather, and with my luck it will look like a nice day but it will turn out to be lightning and thunder on the water. any suggjestions on being able to tell what the weather has in store?

You can check the weather report.

They don't usually tell you about the wind and when they do they're usually wrong.

I've found that accuweather.com gives accurate weather forecasts 90% of the time or better. When they are wrong, it's usually on the conservative side; ie, they forecast a storm but it misses us. I use the NOAA data buoys to get an idea of what the water is like at the moment.

I doubt he meant as in TV and broadcast radio weather reports. You can get up-to-date marine weather reports on NOAA weather radio (Radio Shack and many other stores carry the necessary radios--they're not overly expensive), on-line from places like Weather Underground, and, I believe from USCG resources.

If you have a handheld VHF you tune it to Channel 2. They are more right then wrong, and give you a broad range of information. Certainly more reliable then network news.

You can also get NOAA information for your area online very easily.

This is a great site for getting current conditions at the bouys.
Milford, Ma Weather-Chesapeake Bay Buoy Data

on the home page go to nautical and select your area. It steams the data so watch the map for a minute there is alot of info.

You can also try SailFlow.com - MD - chesapeake Wind Data, which has almost real-time wind data for various locations.

I always check weather underground. Find link here: Welcome to The Weather Underground : Weather Underground
It has a great weather marine site with all kinds of maps including wind and water temp maps, radar, satellite and a bunch of other cool stuff. While I usually check all three sites before we head out, I find weather underground to be consistently more detailed and accurate than weather.com or noaa.gov. Hope this helps!
