Lake Michigan can get rough. I still vividly remember many decades ago leaving Monroe Street Harbor Friday afternoon for a race to Green Bay. Weather deteriorated. Very Early Saturday morning the skipper put out a Mayday - "we were sinking" Coast Guard came back on the radio - obviously a pimply faced recruit "Yacht *** we have your Mayday. You are number 17 in line. We'll get to you when we can."

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I think you meant Natural Selection administers its own competency tests.

No, actually I didn't. Implicit in the concept of natural selection is the notion that some few are always capable of meeting a challenge and surviving.

The sea is ever capable of putting us in a circumstance nobody can survive, and that is what inspires the awe and fascination we have for it.

I say again, best be prepared.

In this case it was the lake... not the sea... but large bodies of water are all the same... take things for granted and you'll find out hard bad things can get.
