Crew Opportunites

I am looking into crewing opportunities int he immediate future. I have some sailing experience but nothing really to speak of. I am looking for advise on what I should look for in taking a crew position. What should I look for in a boat and captain or crew? Do captains give references to past crew? Are there particular things I should stay away from or know? Assuming I can physically handle being on a boat for a month or more, what other kind of preperation should I get? What are the likelihood of finding a good position for a neophyte like me?

Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.
