Ignorant but eager

Hi all! I just signed up, but I'm not really new to this forum- been reading here almost since the day my Dad woke up and said, "No man is an island... unless he has a boat!" So far, I'm halfway through "Chapman Piloting & Seamanship" and have learned quite a bit...

What I'm curious of, is if there's any obscure knowledge that we MUST know before we go... i.e. things that will kill or seriously maim one's person, must-have items that you cannot be without, problems with marine life, etc. Also, if there's anyone in the Cabo San Lucas area that wouldn't mind showing me a few things or needs an extra deckhand or two for the day, please give me a holler! :D

Any help is much appreciated, and I'd like to say thank you to the helpful posts and articles that everyone has contributed to SailNet... It's made learning a lot easier than it could have been!

A good rigging knife or pocket multi-tool, a good whistle, a good water-resistant or water-proof flashlight... a good PFD with harness, are all things that I think every sailor should have. A handheld GPS is a nice toy to have. A water-resistant digital camera is too.

You might want to get David Seidman's The Complete Sailor, if you haven't sailed much or at all. It is very easy to read and covers a lot of material.

must-have items that you cannot be without...
1. Liferaft
2. Epirb
3. GPS + Lotsabatteries
4. Big Honkin' anchor and lotsa chain.

Heh, thanks Sailingdog, Camaraderie. I didn't think of the waterproof digital, but I bet that'd be fun!

Don't fall off of the boat or get hit by the boom.

I say don't ever go without calm nerves. All the equipment in the world won't help you one bit if you panic the instant something goes wrong.

A water maker will be your best friend and the only thing you really cannot live without.

Skip the GPS, buy the knife.

Not too many GPS's cut line very well. Decide what you want to be first, a seaman or an electronics whiz kid, and proceed accordingly. (VBG)
