rend lake sailing ???

went to rend lake with the family for a handful of days...... got the small sailboat ( oday superswift ) up and running.

i was the only sailboat out, and when i went to the marina, i saw only two sailboats !!
apparently rend lake ( illinois ) is not a popular sailing lake. anyone know why ???

yes---- very choppy water, filthy, and ignorant motorist that ignore the right of way for sailboats. but other than that, any other reasons ??

All I can tell you after driving by on the Interstate a number of times, it doesn't look very sailboat friendly from the road. I think most of the sailboats go up to Lake Caryle.

It's shallow, muddy and in the middle of nowhere.

Carlyle is closer to a major metropolitan area - St. Louis, but it's getting silted in and gets shallower every year and the Corp of Engineers has no intention of raising the lake level or dredging. It's my home lake and you learn where the shallow spots are pretty quick. It's really the only place to sail a decent sized cabin boat in the area unless you want to go to the Alton pool on the Mississippi River.
