info about maine

I did post this on another thread but I thought I would start a new one to get info from the Maine crowd.

Since you are discussing Maine could the Mainer's tell me anything about the place.(Jonesport )I know it is a depressed area but it does have a shipyard.( and Lobster boat races!) how much do you think it would cost to haul and store a boat for the winter as this is a one way trip (to no where!!! Maybe!)
His boat draws 7ft. With those big tides I would think that may be a problem also. How far out do you think the boat would have to be moored?

Trying to get some knowledge from knowlegable people.
This site is wonderful!!!

Jonesport

I don't sail in Maine, but I googled "jonesport marinas" and found this ...

Jonesport Shipyard
POB 214, 285 Main St, Jonesport, ME 04649
207-497-2701
jshipyard@mgemaine.com

I'm sure they could answer your questions.

Kurt

Another thing to consider is all the little islands are owned by someone. Most have restrictions. Some will be "only go ashore in certain areas", "no camping", "no fires", "Private no access".

All this information can be found through the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA)

I don't know what the prices up in Jonesport are but you could just call the boatyard and ask. They'll happily give you some prices.

Here in the Casco bay area things run in the ~$4 x sq. ft. for outside storage, and hauling it out of the water can be ~$10 x leng ft.. some yards charge for mast storage.. Of course prices will vary (and sometimes significantly) from boatyard to boatyard, even ones next to eachother.

Freeport, which is only 25 minutes by car north of Portland (so, the south end and north end of Casco bay, respectively) is ~$55/hr for yard labour whereas the Portland yards are $75 to $80.. the farther you head downeast (and Jonesport is almost as downeast as you can get) things should get significantly cheaper. (Washington County's per capita HOUSEHOLD income is in the range of $16,000/yr)
