Very nice, fell in love with bilge-keelers in Ireland, seeing them sit quite happily in the mud while the tide was out (waaaay out). Got interested in the design, hope to make a Westerly my 'retirement boat' someday. More details please, for this junkie .

BTW: http://www.twin-keeler.org/ if anyone's curious about the tandem keels without tandem hulls

The bulkheads were there, so the rooms already divided but that is all there was. The engine is in, the tanks are in and the sub-floors as well as many other things are done. We did not get a sailplan with the hull but my husband wants to set it up as a cutter rig. He now needed the diameter of the base of the mast as they will need this shortly. Hope this helps a little better explain why we need this information. And he did say that he wanted an oval mast and a fractional mast. We do not need to make speed, we want to live aboard and be comfortable. Thank you everyone for your responses.
Toni

Are you talking about Lord Riverdale’s design from the 1930’s? She was 48 feet I think. Does your boat have both twin rudders and twin keels? Lots of information is available about both his experimental work and his boats. Why not look at some of the source material and base your sail plan on his boat. She was a very successful boat and I think she is still sailing.
All the best,

Thanks for the offer. Our current project is being launched on Saturday and after that I will have some free time to work on my boat and follow up on this paper.
All the best,

Gramp34 is on a distinguished road
I'll suggest contacting Klacko Spars in Oakville (near Toronto). http://www.klackospars.com/

Rather than you selecting a section, give them details of your boat and they'll design a mast, boom and rigging to suit it as part of their price quote on the parts. (All spar makers do this.)

As others have pointed out, there's some engineering involved. The mast and standing rigging are built to stand up to the righting moment of the boat, which differs from one boat to another.

I'll also suggest getting quotes from a number of spar makers. Also ask about used masts. Used could save several thousand dollars.

Good luck,

Tim

It doesn't do sailing terms very well. Trust me on this.

Consider Klacko Spars. They did most of the C&C spars and booms, and they are holding up pretty well. http://www.klackospars.com/ They are in Southern Ontario and both my boats have their spars.

EDIT: Oops! Got beaten to the punch on Klacko!
