Omatako,
Quite so. I've long thought that one of those small generators made by Honda or Yamaha would answer a lot of questions, some I'm not even aware of as yet. At a minimum, it would provide some redundancy to the electrical system. Others, the Pardeys most notably, choose to virtually eliminate the electrical system as a way of reducing their dependence.

Another very interesting post, you have certainly whetted the appetite. Thanx.

Quite so on the generator. I've used my Honda 1000 so much the the inboard 6kw Onan has frozen from non-use and lack of mainetnance. It will go into some needy village along my next voyage. Should be easy to rebuild ashore, and I carry the rebuild kit.

Great post, the true adventure!

Andre, thanks for relating this. You're a regular cautionary tale, you are!

You are right, of course, about our (over) reliance on electricity, and you make a case for a spare alternator, a spare regulator, a portable genset and a box of AAs for the handheld GPS!

Good post Omatako, also good to hear about the GAM antenna.

If you have a handheld GPS that uses AA batteries, get the Energizer Lithium AAs. They have a ten-year shelf-life and last about four-times as long as alkalines do... and they're about 1/2 the weight of alkalines... Put them in a water tight container and they're great for a ditch bag. I keep a bunch in vacuum sealed packages... eight to a pack.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
