We've always been able to find a place to drop the hook near Ida Lewis. It's like a mall parking lot... it may be crowded but there are always people leaving and you need to be on the look out for a "parking space".

My real concern is lousy anchoring techniques of too many boaters. I've been the victim of them dragging down on me too many times. Don't anchor down wind of rafted power boats... there's a good chance they're all ashore getting drunk.

There's ample anchorage space north of the Goat Island causeway - call Oldport Launch on ch 68. It's a bit further than Ida Lewis, or southeast harbor anchorage, but it is adjacent to the (free) brokerage show at Newport Shipyard (about 100 yds).

You could also use your dinghy to get to the brokerage show, then take the free boat shuttle to the main show - leaves every 30 min. Buy your ticket when you get to the gate.

That's what I'd do if I was an off island sailor.

Just remember that the causeway is low clearance - approach from the north.
