I can imagine that this was terrifying for the crew.

Can we get opinions from some of you more experienced sailors as to what could/should have been done to try to keep this from happening?

Different tactics with regard to sails or heading choices maybe? I'd hate to encounter this, but would appreciate having heard of the best options available to me if I ever do...
