Video - Boat blown down by circular winds

Found this on another site... scroll down and watch the video... looks like high velocity circular winds or a major microburst... apparently it happened on a lake in Poland... scary stuff.

Labatt,
I bet if you could see that from a distance it might look like a water spout?

Wow,

this was no small microburst: 3 dead, 8 missing and presumed drowned....

Nasty nasty wind but what on earth possessed the skipper to alter course putting his vessel beam to the wind ? (rhetorical question). Great video. To put what looks like a relatively solid vessel on it's beam ends when under bare poles is not a bad effort.

If the winds are going in a circular motion and you are trying to motor directly away from the swirl you will get wind on your beam when it overtakes you (because you are perpindicular to the actual wind). It appears that this happened and/or the boat was immediately broached by the force of the wind crossing the stern.

May have turned because it was headed for shallow water, for all we know.

I would be curious to know what kind of keel and ballast that boat had relative to its size, because that wind made it look like a sunfish.

Looking carefully at the video, it looks as if it turtled at the end - I can see what looks like a keel sticking up.

Looks as though he could have avoided the broach if he hadn't turned hard to port.
