This story reinforces my habit of always donning my PFD when departing and my intention to use a jack line, harness and tether whenever single-handing or in rough weather.

Good tip...thanks!

Another argument in favour of always wearing a PFD when solo sailing, with an option to clip on a tether when out of the cockpit.

Since my wife's been down in NC visiting our son for the past two weeks, I've been out sailing solo on my boat at least 8 times. Never thought of it much when she was always onboard, unless sailing offshore of course. But, one of the first things I do is put on the inflatable vest - before I even leave the slip. My tether and the dog's, gets clipped to a jackline once out of the marina.
