Novice thinking of buying a laser pico

Hi , I 'm a total novice to sailing but have recently starting classes, I'm thinking of buying a laser pico. Firstly I wonder just how plausible are they as a car topper, (probably will be sailing alone) and secondly I have limited storage space, would it be possible to store the pico on its side?
