Great Lakes Boat Show Recommendations

I attended Strictly Sailing in Chicago early this year and loved it. I was wondering what shows in the Great Lakes region would you recommend, especially for a beginning sailor.

Go to the Annapolis show in October. As close to the Great Lakes as you'll get for a real show.

The two biggest in the Chicago area are the Strictly Sail that you attended, and the Michigan City in water show which you just missed.
Michigan City is usually the last weekend in August.

Your best bet in the Great Lakes proper is the Strictly Sail show in Chicago scheduled for Jan. 31 - Feb. 3, 2008. I've attended several of the others in the region over the years, and sailing mostly takes a backseat.

I second the Annapolis suggestion

Go to Annapolis! I've been to Strictly Sail in both Chicago and Miami, the Michigan City show, etc. etc. The U.S. sailboat show in Annapolis is far superior with many boats (Valiant, Hallberg Rassy, Hinckley, Swan, etc.) you won't see at the other shows. The Annapolis show blows all the others away. Plus, you can have dinner at O'Leary's Seafood Restaurant as a bonus.

If you live in Michigan you can get cheap round trip tickets to Balitmore for around $130.00 on NWA out of Detroit Metro any day of the week, rental cars are cheap, and so are decent hotels by the airport. The nice hotels in downtown Annapolis are either booked up or charging $400.00 a night.

You can also spend a day wandering around Jabin's/Port Annapolis and see a wider variety of brokerage boats than you can in a whole summer of shopping around the great lakes.

Yes, the Toronto one is huge. Not such a bargain for Americans anymore, however...

Not a lot of sailboats at the Toronto show.... C&C, Hunter, Beneteau, Catalina, MacGregor, but nothing anyone would really be interested in buying ... ;)

J-Boats? Hanse? There's a few, but admittedly, it's more powerboat-oriented. Lots of deals on ancillary stuff, though.

Must have missed those... I didn't spend a lot of time at the boats. Primarily go to look at the new fittings and gear.
