Forget about using "stick flags" freesail, and attach an angled surface mount socket to your transom rail:

I posted the link more for the courtesy flag part, as the prices were cheap. I have a 36 inch mahogany flag staff.

Well then get a national courtesy flag without the "stick" and attach it to one of your spreader's flag halyards with a pair of these:
