Beautiful!

Makes you wonder what it must have been like to sail a tallship with all those staysails between the masts on top of everything else going on. Are the staysails used only on downwind legs?

I can fly six but it's not very efficient. Five, just like he's doing would be better and yes, I can do it SH. It sure looks cool though and yes, the mizzen staysail is usually only flown downwind or a reach. It's too hard to control upwind.

Nice vintage photograph. Very reminiscent of Roy Disney’s old Shamrock. Ah! The good old days when IOR warhorses roamed S.F. Bay, sails were Dacron and braided line was for wimps! About that time I was crewing on a 50’ (LOD) schooner out of San Rafael, California. We’d sail five upwind then swap the genoa out for a spinnaker for the run “home”. Highlights for (a much, much younger) me was racing Wanderbird in the Master Mariners each year. Thanks for the trip down memory road.
