I would recommend a subscription to Small Craft Advisor. There is no more inspirational magazine around, whether for building or just sailing. It will open almost anyone's eyes as to the wide variety of small boats out there. Every issue exposes you to a boat you've probably never heard of, or seen, and they are all in the class of "I could own one of those ones". And because they are small, they are usually not super expensive. People may sail big boats, people have fun on small boats.
