Great work Alex!!!

If you want to be as good a sailor as Alex I recommend spending lots of time sailing your boat this way, it will make you a much better sailor. It's not just a practice drill for if you lose your rudder, it makes sail trim and boat balance ideas really 'come alive'. I try to spend some time each sail doing it, maybe one day I'll get to wear the orange pants!!!

That is awesome! The hubby and I have discussed this before, as what would we do if we lost the rudder? Of course, you have to be a very good sailor to do this, but it can be done!

Good simple explanation that all should experiment with. My son grew up through the junior program on our lake and has been the head instructor for several years now. One of the exercises they take the kids through is to remove their rudder and then have them sail around a short triangular course. You learn how to balance your sail trim and work together as skipper and crew steering the boat with the sails. Of course this is being done on 16' dinghies. Never the less this lesson would apply to any sail boat.

It would be good to take your videos in successive steps showing more advanced levels of the same concepts. ie, Traveler all the way out and start letting out mainsheet more; main in and let off the jib.

I don't sail on keel boats except for when we do charters. I have wondered why there isn't more discussion in the various books about ocean passaging regarding sailing WITHOUT a rudder. They seem to only focus on replacing it. Granted that is a good thing to do but the boat can still sail with out.

There are/were some sail boats that don't have rudders, you steer by balancing the sails and whatever they use to reduce lee. I can't find it now but I read an article on the net that went over several of the more common ones, it was pretty cool.

Anyone have links?

Basically, windsurfers are small sailboats that don't have any rudder... so they're steered primarily with their sails and by shifting your weight.
