Advise for passage from Key West to Corpus Christi

I have been scouring the internet and am not having much luck on finding information on crossing the Gulf of Mexico. If there is anyone out there who knows of some good guides or has done the trip and can share tips or pointers I would be much obliged. The vessel is a 44' Kalik, Sloop rig, 25,000# displacment with a crew of 3-4.

When are you looking to make the crossing? During the warmer months, the prevailing winds are SE. During the cold months you can, and do, get some really nasty northers. Had a friend cross, Galveston to Tampa last January on a Whitby 42. He needed all new sails when he was done.

Also, the western half is full of oil rigs, fishing vessels, shipping vessels and crew boats.

Going to do the crossing in January. Guess we will have to pick our window carefully!
