When are you looking to make the crossing? During the warmer months, the prevailing winds are SE. During the cold months you can, and do, get some really nasty northers. Had a friend cross, Galveston to Tampa last January on a Whitby 42. He needed all new sails when he was done.
Also, the western half is full of oil rigs, fishing vessels, shipping vessels and crew boats.
