Welcome to November on the Great Lakes

As I sit here in my house dreading the long Michigan winter, there's a very big part of me that's glad I'm not sailing the Great Lakes in November. The following photos were taken in November of 2006 aboard Misener Steamship's M/V Selkirk Settler as she crossed Lake Superior in what was termed "a typical Lake Superior storm". (Sorry for the links - I couldn't embed the photos in the post so they were big enough to see).

Now, picture that last shot as solid ice. These guys get my respect fpor weathering the wind, waves, snow, and freezing water over the bow.

In Traverse City a tug/barge deliveres oil all year long. In December through March you see that barge out there with a foot of ice on her from the waterline up. No thanks!

Nice pic's. My latest wallpaper is a shot from our web cam from last week.
It shows about a 10 foot white water wave breaking into and around our channel entrance. November on the Lakes, not a pretty sight. We all know what happens when the gales of November come early.

Living currently in Houghton, MI. Basically in the middle of Lake Superior, I can say that, yes, you do not want to be out on the big lake right now unless you are crazy. We have already had around 3-6 inches of snow this season, and the storms have been unreal. The long term meteorological forecast is calling for either the worst season on record, or a really mild season (I know, really frickin' useful right?). But we still haven't stopped sailing! I don't know what you all are complaining about The boat isn't coming out until the water gets too solid to sail on. Next time we go out I'll try to snag some good pictures for ya!
