Rockter will become famous soon enough
general interest... bearing design...

Since I am interested in engines, here is a wee article on journal bearing design. The vast majority of our boat motors will have this design...

http://www.reliabilitydirect.com/appnotes/jb.html

I did not know about "oil whirl".

Here is one on roller bearings... more often seen on motorcycles and outboard motors than our diesel engines....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roller_bearing

I have always been amazed as to how they get by on so little lubrication, particularly needle roller bearings. I have an old two-cycle motor than runs and runs.

So, next time you have to strip your engine, and you encounter the inevitable bearings, spare a thought for the engineers that had to design them, and those that chose them for your motor.

Rockter.
